Rhode Island - Newport

The smallest state in the Union with about 1 Million people. We visited the town of Newport - well known for it's mansions. We drove around a scenic route of beachfront properties and then completed a tour of the mansion of railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt - a powerful figure in American finance & commerce during the early part of last centruy. This 4 story, 70 room mansion was modelled after 16th century palaces in Turin and Genoa. It's interior is adorned with marble, stained glass, gilt and crystal. Completed in in 1895 it took 2500 people 2 years to complete! Stunning - unfortunately photos are not permitted inside.
